Google’s security updates – what do I need to do?

Last week Google unveiled some new updates coming to Google Chrome to add an extra layer of security to websites. How will that affect your business? What do you need to do before the updates arrive? You need to act now if you want to make the most of it.

More than ever, websites need to be secure nowadays. Hackers, viruses, spyware, ransomware; all of these things can slip into your business through the internet before you even realise if you’re not careful. This is one of the reasons why Google has developed a new update for Google Chrome and it’s all about security. On 3rd October, Google announced that it would start bringing in a new set of rules for websites to protect users from infiltration software as of December 2019. These new protocols will prevent ‘mixed content’ on ‘HTTPS’ URL pages. What does this mean? Currently, website owners are able to post content on a ‘HTTPS’ certified website that only has a ‘HTTP’ certification. This means that despite having a web page with full security clearance, the extra content on the page is not necessarily cleared as completely safe.

How does this affect my business?

If your business does not currently have a website or any content on another website, this series of updates will not affect you very much. However, if you do have a website or content or another website, then you may need to act now before these updates roll out in December and early 2020. So what do you need to do? Firstly, make sure that all of your content is certified to the same URL standard. If your website has a ‘HTTPS’ certified URL, ensure that all of your content is ‘HTTPS’ standard as well. If it isn’t, either delete it from your website or get it certified to ‘HTTPS’ standard before December. Next, ensure that your content on any other web pages gets updated to this standard as well so that it doesn’t get taken down by the security updates.

How will this help my business?

The point of any security update is to help users to be protected against harmful software. So, this security update will help to protect your business against any security flaws and therefore keep your network safe. One example brought up during the update announcement was that a hacker could place an image of a great stock chart with a hidden link to mislead investors into giving them money instead of the actual business. This is a dangerous flaw in security and if exploited by professionals, could easily destroy a business. Therefore, this security update will benefit you in so many ways so make use of it to the full.
